This peace concert celebrates the UN International Day of Peace by sending out a message from the heart of Texas to inspire and unite people through the medium of classical music. The theme of the UN International Day of Peace 2022 is “End Racism. Build Peace”. This event will be the 5th year for our peace concert at the Texas Capitol Rotunda. Each year the program includes classical and folk music performances, eurythmy with poem recitation, and peace talks. This year the event will be even more memorable, as it will include a Peace Pole Ceremony by the UNA-USA-Austin Chapter and a performance by the Austin based Ukrainian folk-dance group, Sonayshnyk. The name “Sonayshnyk” means ” Sunflower” in Ukrainian.
The program also includes a Trombone solo; a chamber orchestral performance featuring soloists Sandy Yamamoto, Johyun Min, and Benjamin Kronk; a eurythmy & poem recitation; a voice & piano duo; and 2-minute peace talks by representatives of UNA- USA Austin Chapter, Global Austin, and the Austin TX Ukrainian Group.
Special Note about Sonyashnyk
Sonyashnyk’s dance is precisely the kind of experience we need today. It centers upon the uniqueness of the Ukrainian cultural tradition and fills us with optimism during these tragic times. The group invites us to experience the traditional Ukrainian folk dance, but with a modern twist.
